"When Sport and religion meet"
Bismillah.
Assalammualaikum.
After
went through a very tiring but interesting week - Psyc Day with a lot of
assignments' submission, posters and story book, now it's time to back on track
for this one, blogging! Yahoo.
Do
sports make women less religion? Wow. I just discussed this topic of "Do Sports Make Women Less Religious?" with my
fellow friends from Arabic course. All of us came to concluded that the answer
is NO! Why? Let’s look at the ideas below.
Before
I started the conversation, I said to my friends about this one journal article
that studied on the negative effect of sport on women religiosity. How does
playing a sport in high school affect a woman after she has graduated? Betsey
Stevenson (2010) concluded that female former high athletes tend to go further
in school and make more money. But what about the effects on a woman's social
life? Does she become less religion? Less likely to have children? If she does
have children, is she more likely to raise them in a religious way?
The
result for the study stated that participating in sports leads women to reject patriarchal
institutions such as church and marriage perhaps as a consequence of the
confidence and independence that sports participation engenders. From the
result obtained, I think something about these high school and university girl nowadays.
They are very active in sport and most of their times are filled with sport
activities. Thus, when did they performed prayer? Do they have times to do so? How
does sport activities encourage these young girls to still follow the rules and
regulations by Allah SWT which is to pray?
From
my point of view, the reason why my answer was NO to this topic is because most
of women who anticipate and participate in sports activities, mostly they will
be surrounded with their friends. In addition, sport activities may increase
the bonding between them and their fellowship will be strengthen. Thus, for
instance, in a Muslim community, if one girl want to pray right away after Asr
time, the other friends will also join the prayer. This is not about
conformity. This is about obligate the rules of Allah. The function of a person
who has more level of faith is to encourage and promote the spirits of islam
and religion to the others.
As
a conclusion, sport do not lead to women less likely to drop out in religious
activity. Sport is not an excuse to say no for religious doing. Say YES to
SPORT, and Say YES to RELIGION!
OK.
BYE. WASALAM.
